My husband and I LOVE a BBQ in this weather and we have had many of them so far this year!
The thing is BBQ’s can be loaded with a lot of high fat foods like burgers and sausages aswell as things like potato salads and dressings. But you can have a healthy meal and still have a fantastic filling BBQ!
* Have chicken or fish over burgers and sausages – Although not quite the same, you might say, chicken and fish on the BBQ is gorgeous! It’s lighter and can definitely be tastier.
* Marinading and seasoning your meat/fish – Stay away from butter and go for a bit of olive oil or low fat vegetable oil. Remember, a bit of salt and pepper is simple and delicious. Maybe even add a bit of lemon or lime juice for a refreshing taste! If you insist on having your meat/fish flavoured with BBQ sauce or some sort of peri peri, just have a bit on there instead of it smothered on.
* Go for fresh home made salads, not premade – You’d be shocked at all the fat and sugar found in couscous and potato salads that are premade in supermarkets! Get yourself some fresh tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and or leaves like rocket or spinach and make your own. You’ll know exactly what’s in it AND you can help yourself to as much as you want really!
* Say no thank you to butter and cheese – You don’t need your buns and baps buttered for your burgers, you really won’t taste it so just have your bread plain. And if you can resist the cheese, that one little thing will save you a lot of fat.
* Watch what you drink (and how much!) – Beers and wines can be commonly found at BBQ’s so if you are having a drinky drink, just have the one with your main meal. If you’re not much of an alcohol drinker, you might have some refreshing coke or lemonade, but again these are loaded with sugar. Have a refreshing ice cold glass of water, or flavour it with a little squash to quench your thirst to cut down the calories and sugar. Also be careful with how much fresh juice you have as that is loaded with tons of natural sugar but it’s still sugar.
* Puddings! - There’s normally some sort of rich trifle or sugary dessert after the BBQ and you know it too! See if you can have some fresh fruit instead with some low fat yoghurt or some low fat whipped cream, maybe a scoop of ice cream – but stick to just the one scoop! Much less heavy and more satisfying I promise!
