Arena Pharmaceuticals has announced that it has signed off the rights to sell its weight loss drug, Lorcaserin to Eisai Ince. Lorcaserin is a weight loss pill designed to help those that are obese and overweight, to lose weight. Expecting a huge return on their investment, Arena has signed a contract with Eisai that promises to make them more then $1 billion dollars richer. It’s pretty obvious that the company is looking to cash in on people’s desire and desperation to lose weight and improve their health. At first glance, a diet pill might seem like a great gift to those who most desperately need to lose weight. However, when we take a quick look back at the “gifts” scientists and researchers have provided the pubic-at-large in the form of weight loss pills, we find that these “gifts” were best not given. Diet pills whether, over-the-counter or prescription, tend to cause more problems then progress.
Diet pills often contain ingredients which damage the heart and cause users to feel shaky and nervous. Nausea and flushing are common-place. Alli, one of the latest diet pill industry darlings, causes embarrassing spotting. And let’s not forget Redux, which was eventually pulled off the market after those who took it began to develop serious heart problems.
However, even with all of the problems associated with diet pills, I understand the appeal. The promise of losing weight fast and with less effort then the process might ordinarily take, seems ideal. This is especially true for individuals who have a lot of weight to lose. Unfortunately, the use of diet pills and other quick fix approaches, only result in damaged bodies, psyches and yo-yo dieting.
When a person ingests a supplement that takes away their appetite, they may be able to lose weight short-term. However, as soon as they stop taking the pills, they will begin to gain weight, often times more then they lost in the first place. In order to drop the old weight, plus the additional pounds they put on, they are forced to taking the pills again or attempt to try some other quick fix. This is no way to live!!
A much better approach to weight loss involves getting in touch with the reasons why a person overeats in the first place. Being able to identify what those reasons are and then properly addressing them, can help stop overeating. Along the way, learning what foods to eat, which ones to avoid and developing the habit of eating in order to nourish ones body and not to deal with problems, will go a long way to remedy emotional eating and chronic weight gain issues. This exactly what I coach clients about, because until you deal with the primary cause of the problem you will have temporary results at best.
